Contextualizinga YouTube Video
Contextualizinga YouTube Video
1.Summary of the video
TheYouTube video “Negative effects of social media” was edited andposted on the YouTube by Jenna Campbell on April 24, 2013. The mainthemes of the video include the negative effects that the socialmedia has on the children of the school going age, the effect of thesocial media on physical human relationships, and the application ofsocial media in education. The purpose of preparing the YouTubevideo was to show the two sides of the social media, both thenegative and the positive sides. For example Campbell shows that theuse of the social media among the children of the school-going agesubject them to the risk of cyber-bullying, but the same social mediacan be used to organize educational classes.
2.Overall message of the video
Inoverall, Campbell intends to use the YouTube video to show that thesocial media can be dangerous and useful to human beings at the sametime. Campbell holds that the utility of the social media depends onthe value that the society attaches to it and the initiatives takento educate the young users about the potential risks (such as sexualabuse) that the use of the social media might subject them to in thelong run. For example, Campbell reports that children in the currentgeneration are spending about seven hours a day on entertainment, whereby the social media has increased their access totechnology-based entertainment. In addition, about 27 % of the usesof the social media admit that they have made inappropriate Tweetingat least once in their life. Campbell holds that the young peoplemisuse the social media due to the lack of the potential benefitsthat they and get from it by organizing classes and sharing importantinformation.
3.Major themes highlighted in the article
Thevideo addresses several themes, but all of them involve about the useof the social media. The first theme is the abuse of the socialmedia, whereby the school-going children and young people are usingthe social medial to substitute the physical social relationships andat the expense of other important activities, such as education.Secondly, Campbell addresses the theme of the use of the moderntechnology to facilitate or enhance education. For an instant, thesocial media can be used to conduct virtual classes, where childrenshare educational information among themselves and with theirteachers. The theme of accomplishment has also been addressed, butthe girl in the video believes that fulfilling the wish of herboyfriend of posting her video own video on the social mediastrengthened their relationship.
4.Important current societal issues related to the message in theYouTube video
Thevideo addresses two major societal issues. First, Campbell addressesthe issue of cyber-bullying that is taking place in the social media.Campbell’s content is consistent with the findings reported byPappas (2015) indicating that about 47 % of the teens using thesocial media undergo cyber-bullying frequently. Bullying is atraditional crime in human history, but the social media provided aplatform on which more victims can be reached (Donegan, 2012). Thesecond societal issue is the decline in the significance of thephysical relationship and the increase in the importance of virtualrelationships that are being facilitated by the modern technology, especially the social media. Campbell reports that children who usethe social media frequently fail to value physical relationships withtheir friends and feel satisfied with the virtual relationships andinteractions.
5.Course concepts related to the video and the intended audience
Thereare two major course concepts can be identified in the YouTube video. The first, the concept of abuse has been applied in the context ofthe social media by showing that the majority of the teens use theplatforms for entertainment and posting inappropriate content.Secondly, the concept of accomplished has been addressed by providingthe evidence of how one of the teens used the social media site tostrength her intimate relationship. This concept has also beenaddressed in a different context by explaining how the social mediasites can be used to enhance educational accomplishments through thesharing of relevant content among a group of school-age users of thesites.
6.Three things I do not know, but I would like to know about themessage
Thefirst thing I would like to know is whether the social media can beused to complement, rather than substituting the physicalrelationships among the users. Campbell has criticized the socialmedia for reducing the value attached to physical relationshipswithout mentioning whether the social media platform can be usedpositively to strengthen the physical relationships. Secondly, Iwould like to know exactly how the social media can be used tofacilitate learning and what the nature of the educational contentshared on the social media platform could be. Lastly, Campbell pointsout that the social sites are becoming a risk factor for bullyingwhile encouraging children to use the sites positively, and wouldlike to know how teens can be protected from cyber-bullying if theycontinue using the social sites. Even the available research hasfocused on the application of the social sites in higher education(Brady, Holcomb & Smith, 2014), but the application of the mediafor educational purposes is not addressed.
7.Additional sources that would be explored
Thetopics of the abuse of the social media, cyber-bullying, and theapplication of the social media in education can be studied byexploring other sources, such as the research journals, websites ofcredible organizations, recently published textbooks, and the socialmedia sites. All these sources can offer up-to-date information aboutthe topic and measures that can be used to prevent the negativeeffects of the social media.
TheYouTube video “Negative effects of social media” addresses acontroversial issue of the use of the social media among the teens.Campbell points out in the video that the social media sites can beused for positive and negative accomplishments. However, the utilityof the social media depends on the guidance offered to the youngusers
