Thesis:Obesity is one of the pervasive public health problems in the UnitedStates among children, teenagers and grown-ups, and something shouldbe done before the epidemic spin out of control.
What is obesity?
Obesityis a health condition associated with excess adipose tissue in theform of body fat, often defined by both environmental and geneticfactors that are hard to regulate when dieting.
How is Obesity measured?
Thereare various methods of measuring excess adipose tissue in the body,but the most common one used by clinicians is BMI (Body Mass Index).BMI is determined by dividing an individual’s weight in kilogramsby his/her height in meters squared.
What are the causes of obesity?
Americanstoday are consuming foods high in calories than in the past decadewhile engaging in reduced physically indulging activities likewalking and running. The excess calories accumulate in the bodytissues as excess fat.
Americanstoday have adopted a sedentary lifestyle that has replaced walkingwith driving cars. All the physical undertakings have beensubstituted by technology, while nutrition has been replaced byconvenience foods, leading to the progression of obesity.
Thereare some individuals genetically pre-disposed to obesity genes.However, the development of obesity is accelerated by environment andbehavioral factors.
Prevalence of obesity in America
Prevalence among children and teenagers
Today,about 25% of children aged between 2-5 years are overweight in theUnited States. In addition to this, one-third of school goingchildren including adolescents is obese in the United States. 40% oflow-income under-fives are fat.
Prevalence among adults
35.8%of American adults are reflected as being overweight. The obesityrate among adults was 25.5% in 2009 but has increased to 35.8.Therefore, if action is not taken sooner, the prevalence andsubsequent mortality rates attributed to obesity will increase in theimmediate future.
