Comparisonof Ideas

ReinholdNiebuhr in his book ‘The Irony of American History` he highlightshis political philosophy towards the Americans. The paper willdiscuss how the actions of Pyle relate to the ideas of Reinhold. Thefilm ‘Quiet American` tells a story about Pyle, who finds himselfin a love triangle while in his mission in Saigon, Vietnam. Pyle isa representative of American policies in Vietnam1.His mission as a CIA was to steer war for American interests. He is astrong believer of York Harding`s ideas hence adopts the idea ofusing ‘third force` to restore order2.

Reinholdbelieves that human virtue is at best ambiguous and hence evilresults from ignorance that is manageable3.Pyle decides to set the third force using the corrupt militia thatleads to terrorism and continuous bombing4.His belief in Harding`s ideas blindfolds his calculation for therisks involved in his action that causes the death of innocent peoplewhere women and children are included.

Thebooks also claim that the Americans pretend to be innocent andtherefore, the bombing was blamed on the communist5.It seems that they do not expect Americans to be part of theexplosion as they keep their distance and were not among the mainfighters. That way, they use their innocence to cover up their wrongssince they are not on the list of the suspects. They make a strategicplan where they use the corrupt militia to execute their dutieswithout being directly involved6.

Inconclusion, the action of Pyle to lead the bombing goes hand in handwith Reinhold`s philosophical ideas about America. Since herepresents American policies and interest, his ignorance, as well aspretence for innocence is those of America as a whole.
