Abstract

Workplacestress is a prevalent problem that affects employee performance aswell as personal health. Stress influences the productivity of theworkforce in an organization because of lack of concentration and dueto the experience of associated health problems. Company’sperformance majorly depends on the conduct of the employees, which isalso influenced by their mental and physical health. Having workplacestress leads to other health problems like cardiovascular illnessesand mental disorders among others. Workplace violence often occurswhen people within the workplace setting become aggressive with eachother either physically or verbally. Workers are hence threatened orat times physically assaulted. Approximately five percent ofaccidents that occur within the workplace are often associated withviolence in the workplace. Violence in the workplace is henceassociated with stress within the workforce. The organizationalenvironment contributes to workplace stress because of overworkingthe employees or not being treated fairly by the management team.Stressors in the workplace should be identified early enough to lookfor the solutions. First tackling of the stressors can quickly leadto reduced violence rates within the working environment. Meditationprograms within the workplace can be useful avenues that can be usedto tackle the stress problem in the organization and hence reduceviolence within the workplace. Meditation can additionally assistemployees with acquiring mental and emotional stability.

Thefocus and benefits of the practice

Thispaper concentrates on the practice of implementation of meditationprogram in the corporate America to reduce workplace violence throughthe avoidance, reduction, and efficiently dealing with stress amongworkers. The method aims at improving the mental status of theemployees, which would also help in improvement of the organizationalperformance while at the same time reduce accidents due to workplaceviolence. Meditation program aims at reducing stress-related issuesat the workplace.

Stressin the workplace is a major epidemic that affects the health of theemployees. Also, stress influences the productivity of workers at theworkplace. Violence in the workplace is often a product of stresswithin the workforce. Violence has numerous effects that are likelyto affect the overall performance of an organization. Physicaleffects result in an injury that may lead to reduced performance ofan employee or even absenteeism of employees (Lee &amp Yeo, 2013).Violence is furthermore associated with psychological effects on thevictims. Employees may lack confidence and increased panic within theworking environment, therefore, leading to reduced performance.Therefore, dealing with stress is one of the most efficient waysthrough which violence in the workplace is reduced.

Meditationis a type of mind and body harmonizing medicine as meditation resultsinto a deep state of relaxation and tranquil mind. Meditation is away of terminating the thought process in a person suffering fromstress (Melville et al., 2012). Meditation thus leads to enhancedphysical and emotional well-being as, during meditation, anindividual focuses their attention eliminate the thought that resultsin stress. The organizations require implementation of themindfulness meditation among their employees to enhance reductionstress suffered when working. Numerous benefits are associated withmeditation and hence can positively influence workers who arecurrently suffering from stress. Meditation has the effect ofproviding an individual with a sense of calm, peace and balance thatbenefits workers’ overall health (Petchsawang &amp Duchon, 2012).Meditation improves the emotional well-being of employees as theworkers can gain new perspective concerning stressful situations,figure out skills for controlling of stress, develop self-awareness,focus on the present and essential issues and finally reduce negativeemotions and thoughts.

Aimsand Objectives of the Study

Thispaper seeks to identify how the OHN (Occupation Health Nurse) andOHNP (Occupational Health Nurse Practitioner) can create theenvironment through implementation of meditation program to theorganizations. Application of meditation is vital since people arefull of stress because of overworking, information issues, and jobsecurity influence the contemporary corporate world. The momentchallenges turn into stress the result is poor health. The articlealso identifies the benefits of incorporating meditation into awellness program. The paper looks at how this program will work andcost benefits of having meditation program in the companies.

Discussionof the problem and relevance to occupational health nursing

Whenworkers experience violence and poor management at the workplace,they tend to suffer from stress. Stress in companies’ is asignificant issue towards the operation of the businesses. Around 80%of workers experience stress when doing their job in companies (Lee &ampYeo, 2013). The health condition leads to psychological changesreflecting poor performance, which negatively influences theirproductivity and the general performance of the corporation. Theconduct of occupational health nursing would help in improving themental status of the employees hence, good social life at theworkplace and outside and improved work presentation (Elder et al.,2014).

Backgroundand epidemiology

Stressis big distracter to person’s concentration and commitment intoone’s duties. It is evident that when workers suffer from stress,the problem results to other health related issues such as insomnia,cardiovascular illness, fear, anxiety, inflammation in the body,autoimmune diseases, and heart disease among others (Lee &amp Yeo,2013). Furthermore, experiencing inflammation in the body causescancer problem. These health problems affect the working ability ofthe employees worsens their performance, and leads to minimalturnover rates of the organizations. The workplace stressors includetask control stressors, interpersonal, physical, organizational, androle-related stressors (Petchsawang &amp Duchon, 2012). Due to theexistence of such a stressing environment, the problem of stressshould be tackled efficiently. Meditation is one of the mostefficient ways of managing workplace stress (Melville et al., 2012).The OHN and OHNP should play a significant role in implementing themeditation program within the workforce to decrease the stressor thatthe employees face on a daily basis in the corporate America.

Howthe OHN and OHNP can create a Meditation environment

Ameditation program is a wellness program that employees at workshould benefit from. Implementing the meditation program wouldrequire the OHN and OHNP to identify the aims of having the programin individual organizations. According to the argument put forth byElder et al. (2014), to start the meditation program, there has to bea clear understanding of the positive gains at the workplace. Themanagement within the organization should hence create in-depthawareness of the upcoming program and its benefits to the well-beingof the workers, society, and the patients. Initially, it is essentialto check how the training would fit with the current culture in anorganization. The program`s design is in a way that the groupmaintains its current culture and additionally the program does notinterfere with any ongoing practices or program. The OHN and OHNPshould ask themselves whether the values of the company overlap withsuch a plan and how meditation can adapt the corporation’s culture(Lee &amp Yeo, 2013).

Similarly,the occupation health expertise should identify the possiblechallenges during the mediation program implementation such asimpatience of the employees and their lack of motivation. Theidentification of the challenges would assist in analyzing the bestway to introduce the program in the corporation. Analysis of thepossible challenges provides the organization with an upper hand ofcoming up with a plan B that would still ensure that the achievementof the initial agenda is still a priority. Luken and Sammons (2015)articulate that the other essential step entails sharing with theemployees the information associated with reasons for adaptation ofthe program in the company and the gains related to the plan. Thesession requires being conducted as a briefing assembly to allow theparticipants acknowledge the company’s concern and how the trainingwould be carried out among the target persons either individually orin a group. In some cases where the employees are hesitant, it isimportant to educate them about the meditation process as this islikely to soften their hearts into cooperating during the program(Malarkey, Jarjoura &amp Klatt, 2013).

Thepractice of implementing a meditation wellness program in theAmerican corporations requires integration of a 15-20 minutemeditation session daily in the workplace, for instance, in themeeting halls or the offices. Good space should be prepared for themeditation practice (Melville et al., 2012). The course has to beplanned to last for a given period according to the company’soperation timetable. After setting a tight schedule, the OHN and OHNPshould look for a professional meditation trainer. As postulated byPetchsawang and Duchon (2012), the creation of the meditation programrequires assistance from a professional with experience in the samefield, such as the Yoga teacher. The area designated for themeditation should be in a peaceful and quiet area that does not bringemployees distractions during the sessions.

Thepractice should start by looking at the causes of stress among theemployees in a particular organization and strategizing on how totackle them (Deshpande, 2012). The OHN and OHNP help the participantsto control their negative perspectives and thoughts during thepractice. The meditation teachers will have to be accompanied by someof the management team members within the corporation to help increating rapport and for their formal recognition by the partakers ofthe teaching sessions. Upon completion of the program, the OHN andOHNP should evaluate the success of the program. The participantsshould give feedback regarding learning and the related benefits ofusing meditation style as anti-stress therapy.

Thebenefits of incorporating meditation into a wellness program

Executionof meditation style program helps in reduction of stress and resultsin increased happiness, comfort, productivity, and engagement of theworkers (Malarkey et al., 2013). Also, there is a generation of abetter relationship between the managers and the employees in theirdiverse departments (Deshpande, 2012). The practice also helps inattitude changes with much respect given to the directors by theemployees. Meditation can solve stress violence in the workplace byallowing workers to reduce their anxiety generate a feeling ofcalmness, self-acceptance, and emotional stability (Luken, &ampSammons, 2015). The program can assist in the reduction of costs suchas decreasing depression because one is trained on how to appreciatelife and improve one’s relationship with other people thus avoidingloneliness (Melville et al., 2012).

Themeditation program will help the employee relieve, stress (Lee &ampYeo, 2013). Offering the program of meditation will benefit theemployees` and subsequently the organization. To the workers, theprogram will improve their physical and mental growth. Theimplementation of the meditation program, workers will be able torelease tension from the job place which affects their psychologicallevel, emotional and physical and poor job performance (Deshpande,2012).

Theimplications for occupational health nursing practice

Theimpact of implementation of meditation program is that theprofessional health would improve. The health and physical well-beingwill improve while illnesses will be well managed. The occupationhealth nursing practice helps both the workers and the organizationsin general (Petchsawang &amp Duchon, 2012). There will be improvedworkplace performance due to enhanced worker satisfaction anddevelopment of positive thoughts and good relationship within theorganization. The relationship between employees and the managementteam would be outstanding, and this would make working in companiesmore enjoyable.

Summary

Stressin the workplace is a major epidemic that influences the performanceof corporations while ate the same time results in violence. Stressleads to significant health problems that prevent the proper workingof the employees. To solve the problem, the OHN and OHNP shouldimplement a meditation program in the companies. The practice shouldbe done majorly focusing conducting training among the workforce. Thetrainer should understand the organizational culture andcorporation’s calendar to make an efficient plan on how to conductthe teaching sessions. Meditation model helps reduce stress anddepression from workers. It also enhances improved productivity ofthe organizations. Meditation also improves the physical well-beingof individuals. The benefit follows so because, emotional stability,self-appreciation, and improved social relationship within theworkplace help the employees to play their duties effectively.Meditation is a precursor to medical treatment during the managementof stress-associated health conditions among the employees. From theprogram, the participants will understand individual-directed stressmanagement and subsequently improve corporation turnovers.
