Accordingto statistics by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention anumber of conic diseases exist in the Indianola region. Among adultsthe two leading ailments affecting the population include cancer andheart disease which result to 48% of fatalities (Disease Control andPrevention, 2015).
Obesityis another increasing health concern among children and adults inIndianola. The highest percentage of adult obesity in the UnitedStates in the 2007 was from Mississippi which was rated at 34%. In2008 Sunflower County was also rated as the region with the highestnumber of obese individuals at 38.6%. Most of the families in theregion live in low poverty levels yet the adolescents are obese(NationalInitiative for Children`s Healthcare Quality, 2014). Thechildren can either be classified as obese or overweight. Numeroushealth care facilities do exist in Indianola. Most of the healthcarefacilities do not offer free services. The closest healthcare centerthat provides free services is at Moorhead Clinic in Moorhead whichis seven miles away (Dowell, nd).Some of the health care servicesin the region include
Clinicsare predominant in the area. Some of the clinics include DeltaSurgical clinic, the Rose eye clinic and family dental care. Publicpractitioners have established their health care services. Thisinclude Julia, R, Hill and Ellis, W, Bernard (Dowell, nd).
Amajorhospital in the area is the South Sunflower County Hospital. Thehospital provides services such as radiology, lab services,obstetrics, pediatrics, ultrasound, CAT scan, and mammography. Thehospital does not provide emergency services and is also limited inproviding in urology, gynecology and surgery (Dowell, nd).
TheHealth Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) (2012) disclosedthat Sunflower County is situated in a Medically UnderservedArea/Population (MUA/P) and a Health Professional Shortage Area(HPSA). The needs assessment therefore concluded that there isactually a shortage of mental health physicians and professionalsnevertheless there is no scarcity of dentists. Currently, the onlymental health institution in the region is the Life Help MentalHealth Center that offers mental healthcare for the service area. Itis situated next to the South Sunflower County Hospital (Dowell, nd).
Theexisting traditional healers in the Indianola are majorly Chineseherbal clinics. The clinics mainly use traditional Chinese treatmentmethods such as Acupuncture and Chinese medicine in order to improvehealth and wellness. A leading clinic is the Indianola Acupunctureand Herbal Clinic (Alternative Therapy, 2016). Herbal healers alsoexist in the area that are not Chinese based.
Several nursing home exist in the area. The nursing homes mainlyhouse the elderly with injuries and chronic health conditions.
