Health experts` states that poor lifestylehabits practiced by Americans such as smoking, excessive alcohol use,poor diet, lack of physical activity and overuse of pain killers andsedatives can have serious and lasting health impact on theseindividuals. Consequently, 75 percent of healthcare expenses are usedto treat preventable diet- related chronic diseases. This paper willanalyze the most harmful habitsinthe United States (Thompson, 2013).

Smoking

Smokingis the most harmful and popular habit in the world. CDC reports thatmore than 16 million people living in America have a disease causedby smoking. Overall, cigarette smoking directly causes harm to bodyorgans such as the lungs, throats, mouth. Thus, puts an individual atan increased risk of cancer, heart attack, asthma attacks,bronchitis, and stroke. Statistically, tobacco use and smoking causeabout 435,000 deaths in America annually. However, CDC reports ifnobody smoked in America then the cancer deaths would be reduced(CDC,2016).

Lackof physical activity, Poor diet and nutrition

Accordingto the World Health Organization, physical inactivity can be linkedto negative implications, such as cardiovascular diseases anddisability. A sedentary lifestyle like spending too much timewatching TV is a bad habit. Research shows that those people whowatch TV for more than two hours end up eating more especially snacksand other sugary soft drinks. Furthermore, people who are lessphysical, risk developing type 2 diabetes and becoming overweight(Thompson, 2013).

Americanshave been reported to practice poor eating behavior. Overall, peopleconsume diets containing a lot of sugary foods, cheese, red meatsoda, starch and inadequate fruits and vegetables. Clearly, the fastfood industry in America has increased with individuals preferringnon-stop snacking even when one is not hungry. This is dangerous andcan result in constant overeating and obesity that exposes them tothe risks of heart diseases, diabetes, and other serious conditions. Statistically, lack of physical activity, poor diet and nutrition arereported to cause approximately 400,000 deaths each year (Burnham,1992).

Excessivealcohol consumption

Regularoverdrinking of alcohol is a habit that can be poisonous. People whodrink more than three drinks per day are at an increased risk ofdamaging their liver, cancers, high blood pressure and depression.Statistics show that excessive alcohol consumption cause about85,000&nbspdeathsin America each year (CDC,2016).

Painkillersand sedatives overuse

Anotherharmful habit is the long-term habitual use of painkillers andsedatives such as aspirin, ibuprofen. This practice can increase therisks of ulcers, heart attack, high blood pressure, andgastrointestinal bleeding. Pain-relief strategies to ease muscle,joints and head pains can lead to addiction since it makes one feelsgood and thus, may want to keep taking them (Burnham,1992).

Healthchallenges in the United States

Accessibilityis one of the greatest challenges facing health in the U.S today.Currently, not all citizens have access to healthcare with theuninsured population projected to increase in the future. Secondly,health care is costly, and not everyone can afford as the cost ofliving continues to soar. Shortage of healthcare professionals alsoremains a top issue in America. This deficiency can lead to declinedquality, as well as the effectiveness of the healthcare system.However, based on past experiences, a majority of Americans thinkthat management challenge is one of the greatest issues affecting theU.S health care. This has been caused by the continued failure ofdecision makers to come up with an agreement on how to tackle themajor health care challenge. However, they are of the opinion thatthe nation can overcome these challenges by intrepid leadership. Onthe other hand, in other countries both developed and developingchallenges to health include a shortage of qualified doctors,hospital errors and infections, as well as poor quality (Merrild,2015).

Differentchallenges to health between a resident of the Philippines and GreatBritain

Thestandards of medical care in the Philippines may not be compared tothat in Great Britain. The structure of healthcare in Great Britainis centralized and a single-payer system. Globally, Britain’shealth care system has been named the best regarding access,coordinated care, efficiency and patient-centered care. On the otherhand, the healthcare system in the Philippines is decentralized witha social health insurance system that provides insurance coverage forall Filipinos. However, it is marred by problems such as inadequatefacilities, lack of professional personnel and inaccessibility.Evidently, a resident in Great Britain may have access to free andequitable healthcare compared to when in Philippines (Merrild,2015).

Inconclusion, it is inevitable for an individual with unhealthy lifebehaviors to make a transition to a healthy lifestyle by makingconscientious behavior changes, such as increase physical inactivityand exercise, stop smoking, consume healthy foods and use stressrelieving techniques like yoga and behavioral health coaching. Takingresponsibility for one’s health can increase a person’s lifespanand improve their quality of life.
