Unit 9Assignment

Pick a topic ofinterest that you would want to study. It is recommended, but notrequired, to use the same topic you have used for prior learningactivities.

What is yourtopic? InterventionstoPrevent the Devastating Psychological Health Consequences ofPost-TraumaticStress Disorder (PTSD) inAdults

What is yourresearch question? What is the effectiveness ofearly interventions to prevent PTSD or to improve health outcomes inadults exposed to psychological trauma?

What is yourhypothesis? Early psychological interventions are effective inpreventing progression to PTSD within the first three months afterthe exposure to trauma.

Complete thetable below:

Single Case Design

How could this method be used with your study question? Describe in 2–3 sentences how you could create a study with this design.

Using a single case study, one can carry out an in-depth investigation of the nature of preventions put in place by a psychiatry department to improve the mental and behavioral health of adults, who have been exposed to trauma.

The case study will involve evaluation of the effectiveness of these interventions in improving the health of adults with PTSD.

What are possible strengths of this approach?

A case study will enable an in-depth understanding of the phenomenon that has seen research for quite sometime

What are limitations of this approach?

Case study findings cannot be statistically validated since no sampling strategy was incorporated in data collection. In order to propose generalizations, there is the need to compare two or more case studies.

Observational Design

How could this method be used with your study question? Describe in 2–3 sentences how you could create a study with this design.

The observer to use a checklist and record his observations regarding the recovery of adults with PTSD in terms of their behaviors.

The researcher to actively participate in the daily lives of the adults with PTSD questioning them, listening to them and observing their behavior

What are possible strengths of this approach?

The study is exploratory in nature hence more evidence is gathered

The approach mainly focuses on the behavior of the victims of PTSD, which helps in determining the effectiviness of the psychological interventions already in place

What are limitations of this approach?

Observational design is prone to subjective bias where the researcher may incorporate his/her opinions in the results

Survey Design

How could this method be used with your study question? Describe in 2–3 sentences how you could create a study with this design.

Survey research will involve the selection of a sample of respondents from the target population. The questionnaire will be administered to them.

What are possible strengths of this approach?

Since the questionnaires are self-administered, the researchers will get first-hand information. The trained interviewer can guide the respondents on how to answer the questions

What are limitations of this approach?

Collects information under conditions of control and hence limiting the amount of data collected from the population.

Quasi-Experimental Design

How could this method be used with your study question? Describe in 2–3 sentences how you could create a study with this design.

Observe two groups of adults with PTSD before any intervention. Apply the intervention measures such as medication and then compare the two groups after the intervention

What are possible strengths of this approach?

Gives room for study where the confounding variables, which affect both independent and dependent variables, cannot be controlled

What are limitations of this approach?

The study results may be affected by the influence of confounding variables

Single Factor Experimental Design

How could this method be used with your study question? Describe in 2–3 sentences how you could create a study with this design.

Experimental will involve identifying the cause-effect relationship through manipulation control and randomization

The researcher will manipulate the independent variable (psychological interventions) to observe its effects/impacts on the dependent variable (mental health and behavior of the adults with PTSD).

What are possible strengths of this approach?

The study involves control of the confounding variables such as the involvement of highly qualified personnel in the treatment of adults with PTSD.

What are limitations of this approach?

It is not possible to have strict control over the confounding variables in this study and hence the internal validity of the cause-effect relationship is in question.

If you had agrant to study your topic of interest, which of these designs wouldyou use?

Why?

In a minimum ofthree pages, write the methods and discussion section of a researchpaper using the selected design. You can choose to discuss resultsthat confirm your hypothesis or results that disconfirm yourhypothesis. In the discussion section, be sure to discuss limitationsto your study, ways that future research could overcome theselimitations and provide further information, and ways thatprofessionals could use the results of your study. Be sure to includea title and reference page, in APA format. Per APA format, all pagesshould also have a running head.
